The Leeds Geological Association was formed in 1874 by a group of enthusiasts attending a series of extra-mural lectures on Natural Sciences given in Leeds by Cambridge University - an early example of bringing the University to the people.
The aim of the group was to extend their knowledge and experience of some of the geological processes and materials which they had been studying, and to see how these were illustrated in fairly local exposures and in areas which could be reached with comparative ease by the public transport available at that time.
