The 2006 field calendar included seven meetings in a variety of geological settings.
The first meeting examined the evidence for environmental change during the Jurassic (Toarcian) as seen in the rocks exposed along the east coast at Port Mulgrave and Sandsend. In May there was an opportunity to walk the Roundhay Park Geological Trail and see examples of faulting and folding in the heart of Leeds. Glacial features in the Manchester area (re-assessed recently by the BGS) were examined in June. Two meetings were held in July, the first to Castleton, Derbyshire, and the second to St Peter's Church in Kirkgate, Leeds. In September the depositional environment of the Sherwood Sandstone was scrutinised. The field season concluded in October with the traditional residential weekend, this year on the Isle of Man.

Saturday 29th April 2006 — Port Mulgrave and Saltwick
|
Leaders: Dr Angela Cole, Open University.
Purpose: To examine Jet Rock and associated strata for evidence of a major environmental perturbation in Earth history during the Toarcian. There is an associated mass extinction event and evidence for a rapid increase in the rate of chemical weathering. We will see Jet workings, lots of fossils and some interesting nodules.
Geology: Jurassic.

Wednesday 17th May 2006 — Roundhay Park Geological Trail
|
Leader: Bill Fraser, LGA.
Purpose: An opportunity to examine the Roundhay Park Geological Trail, exhibiting faulting and folding in Millstone Grit and Coal Measures exposures, which it is planned to open in 2007. The LGA is supporting the Friends of Roundhay Park in preparation of the trail and a proposed Interpretative Centre to be sited in the Mansion House.
Geology: Carboniferous.

Saturday 10th June 2006 — Rossendale Forest and North Manchester
|
Leader: Dick Crofts, British Geological Survey.
Purpose: To examine features of the glacial geology reviewed in recent BGS mapping work, at locations in the Rossendale Forest and North Manchester.
Geology: Quaternary.
Note: Joint meeting with the Manchester Geological Association.

Sunday 2nd July 2006 — Castleton, Derbyshire
|
Leader: Paul Hildreth.
Purpose: To examine Carboniferous facies, evidence of mineralisation and the geomorphology of the area west of Castleton, including Winnat's Pass, Mam Tor / the landslip and Windy Knoll.
Geology: Carboniferous, Quaternary.

Saturday 8th July 2006 — St. Peter's Church, Kirkgate, Leeds
|
Leader: Murray Mitchell, LGA.
Purpose: To examine decorative and other stones inside, and building stones / features outside the church.

Saturday 2nd Sept 2006 — The Sherwood Sandstone of South Selby
|
Leader: Dr Steve Truss, University of Leeds.
Purpose: To examine braided river features in the disused quarry at Pollington, south of Selby, including a very rare section of an abandoned channel, river and overbank deposits, dune bed formations, climbing dunes etc.
Geology: Triassic.
