Thursday 21st May 2009 — New RIGS sites at Wetherby Cliff and Boston Spa
|
Leader: Alison Tymon.
Purpose: Examination of exposures in the Permian at Wetherby and in the riverside cliff at Boston Spa which are to be designated
as RIGS Sites by West Yorkshire Geological Trust.
Geology: Permian.

Saturday 6th June 2009 — Johnsons Wellfield Quarry at Crosland Hill, Huddersfield
|
Leader: Graham Mallinson & Nicola Bullas, Johnsons Management.
Purpose: To examine sections in the Millstone Grit, stone extraction and working processes.
Geology: Carboniferous.

Sunday 14th June 2009 — Runswick Bay
|
Leader: Prof Paul Wignall, School of Earth & Environment, University of Leeds.
Purpose: To examine the Lower Jurassic structure between Runswick and Kettleness.
Geology: Jurassic.

Saturday 27th June 2009 — North Lincolnshire Chalk
|
Leader: Paul Hildreth.
Purpose: To examine use of the 3 main markers (flint, marl and shell beds) in correlation of the chalk stratigraphy.
Recognition of distinctive characteristics of the Ferriby, Welton and Burnham Chalk Formations.
Geology: Cretaceous.

Sunday 26th July 2009 — Manifold Valley , N Staffs Peak District and Ecton Hill Copper Mine
|
Leader: Dr Neil Aitkenhead, BGS (retired), former LGA President.
Purpose: To examine the lithology and structure of Carboniferous limestones of basin facies to the west of the Peak District
carbonate platform at the western margin of the North Staffordshire Basin. The well-bedded limestones, belonging to
the Ecton Limestone Formation, are of tyrbidic facies and are highly folded and well displayed in roadside exposures.
They are interspersed with knoll reefs or carbonate mudmounds, well exposed round Wetton Mill in the Manifold Valley , an area
of spectacular and beautiful scenery. To make the visit along Salts Level of the old Ecton Hill Copper Mine, see old workings,
a copper vein, associated folding etc. The mine is long disused and now and educational trust.
Geology: Carboniferous.
