Excursion Details
Details of this year's field excursions may be found below.

Please note the following general points:
  • Health & Safety: Before commencing each field visit, all attendees will be asked to read notes on hazards likely to be encountered on the visit and sign the sheet to indicate that the notes were read and understood.
  • Attendance: It is very helpful to know how many may attend a visit in advance, especially where a high turn-out may cause a potential problem. Please advise Howard Dunnill (Field Visit Secretary) on 01423 868643 (a brief answerphone message is enough).
  • Transport: Please share cars where possible as parking at some venues is restricted. If you need a lift, please ring Howard on the above number for assistance.
  • Insurance: Please remember that you must provide your own personal insurance. The Association's insurance gives only third party insurance for the Association itself.
  • Equipment: Stout walking boots are required on all excursions unless otherwise stated. Attendees are asked to bring waterproofs and clothing appropriate for changes of weather. Please also note the comments below for individual field visits regarding hard hats, etc.
Thursday 5th June 2008    —     Open Cast Coal Site, Wakefield

Leader: Graham Hindmarsh, Site Manager, UK Coal.

Purpose: An opportunity to examine a new open cast pit which at the time of the visit should have a 25m face.

Geology: Carboniferous.

Practical arrangements: Meet at 5.45 pm the Site Office (Grid Ref: SE 384 209). The easiest approach is to leave the M62 at Junction 31, and take the A655 towards Wakefield. The site is 3km along this road on the left. There is parking on site. We will access the pit by landrover and inspect the faces etc on foot. The visit will end at about 7.30 pm.

Special Equipment: Bring hard hats and high visibility vests if you have them - although some will be available for those without. (See also the general note on equipment above).

Wednesday 11th June 2008     —     Birkshead Mine & Newbiggin Quarry

Leader: Dr Noel Worley, British Gypsum.

Purpose: An opportunity to visit the last operating gypsum mine in Cumbria and also workings at Newbiggin Quarry, which will be landscaped later in the summer.

Geology: Permian.

Practical arrangements: Meet at Birkshead Mine (Grid Ref: NY 664 257) at 10.00 am. There is parking at both the mine and the quarry. After a briefing we will visit the mine in the morning, have a packed lunch, and then visit Newbiggin Quarry in the afternoon, finishing at about 4.30 pm. We will use some mine transport but also walk on gradients of mostly less than 1:8, but in places 1:4, in the mine workings. There will be a handout.

There is a limit on number in the party to 15 (underground) and this is a visit to a working drift mine. Therefore it is essential that all members of the party notify Howard Dunnill (01423 868643) of their attendance in advance.

Special Equipment: Wear stout boots and bring hard hats and high visibility vests (although some will be available). Samples can be collected, but no hammering is allowed. Photography is only allowed where indicated by mine personnel. (See also the general note on equipment above).

Saturday 28th June 2008     —     East Yorkshire Coast

Leader: Dr James Lawrence, School of Earth & Environment, University of Leeds.

Purpose: An investigation of the Northern Province chalk geology, including the applied aspects of the rock (engineering, hydro, petroleum geology).

Geology: Cretaceous.

Practical arrangements: Meet at 10.30 am in the car park north-east of Reighton (Grid Ref: TA 140 763). We will initially walk along the beach to examine exposures at Bempton, and then progress to exposures at Flamborough Head. The day will end at Flamborough Head at about 5.00 pm. There will be a handout. Bring a packed lunch.

Special Equipment: Hard hats will be required (and hammers/specimen bags). (See also the general note on equipment above).

Sunday 13th July 2008     —     Cow Green and Cauldron Snout

Leader: Dr Doug Holliday, BGS.

Purpose: To follow the Cow Green Geological Trail above Cow Green Reservoir and examine features in the limestone sequence, the Whin Sill and evidence of metamorphism in adjacent rocks, and a section in the basal Carboniferous strata below the limestone.

Geology: Carboniferous.

Practical arrangements: Meet at the car park overlooking Cow Green Reservoir at 10.30 am (Grid Ref: NY 811 309). The drive from Leeds is about 2.5 hours. Note: There are no toilets at this location, but toilet stop opportunities exist at Middleton and at Bowlees car park (Grid Ref:NY 908 282). Bring a packed lunch. We will first walk to the top of Cauldron Snout following the Cow Green Geological Trail, and then follow the Tees to Falcon Clints and a spectacular locality at the base of the sill showing its intrusive nature and sections in the basal Carboniferous strata.

The total walk is about 9km, the 4km beyond Cauldron Snout requiring stout footwear. The whole walk is exposed, so bring protective clothing. Hard hats are not required. There will be a handout. (Anyone not wishing to cover the 9km can return from Cauldron Snout, a walk of about 5 km, with the option of a visit to High Force).

Special Equipment: Stout footwear, protective clothing. Hard hats are not required. (See also the general note on equipment above).

Saturday 30th August 2008     —     Huddersfield White Rock

Leader: Tony Benfield, BGS (retired), former LGA President.

Purpose: To demonstrate some of the constituent lithofacies of the sandstone member of a late Namurian (Marsdenian Sub-stage) cyclothem and to link them to their deltaic and fluvial depositional environments.

Geology: Carboniferous.

Practical arrangements: Meet in the car park of the Pennine Manor Hotel, Scapegoat Hill (Grid Ref: SE 087 168) at 10.00 am. To reach this point from the M62 westbound, leave the motorway at Junction 24, take the A643 (Rochdale), then the A640 to Outlane. At the SW end of the village turn left into Round Ings Road (Signposted Scapegoat Hill and Pennine Manor Hotel). At the top of the hill turn left following sign for Hotel. In 200 metres turn left into hotel grounds and then bear left to park at far northern end overlooking M62. Please Note: parking at some localities is limited, so please share cars. It will be possible to leave some cars at the Hotel. Also please note that the excursion will probably extend into the afternoon, and members should bring a packed lunch. Walking distances will not be great and on mainly level ground, though some steep sections may be encountered.

Special Equipment: Hard hats and high visibility vests are needed. (See also the general note on equipment above).

Fri 12th - Sun 14th Sept 2008    —    Residential Weekend: Glamorgan

The party is now complete and separate notes will be sent to members in April.

Saturday 4th October 2008     —     Howardian Hills

Leader: Jon Ford & Simon Price, BGS.

Purpose: An overview of the Jurassic succession of the Howardian Hills – the southern limit of the Cleveland Basin. We will visit several localities that demonstrate the local succession and show how regional tectonic events during the evolution of the Basin have affected sedimentation. We hope to visit one active quarry to demonstrate economic opportunities resulting from the atypical succession, and will show how recent work by the BGS is improving our understanding of local geohazards.

Geology: Jurassic, Cretaceous, Quaternary.

Practical arrangements: Meet at 10.15 am at Welburn on the roadside outside the Crown and Cushion pub (Grid Ref: SE 205 802). Welburn is signed left off the A64 just after the turn to Castle Howard, 15km after leaving the York ring road. The day will end at this location at about 4.00 pm, and we will need to share cars during the day as parking is difficult at some locations. Please inform Howard Dunn
ill (01423 868643) if you are coming (to determine numbers for handouts) and share cars if possible. Both rough sections and boggy sections through woods will be encountered. Boots needed, but wellingtons may be a better option. As we will visit a working quarry, hard hats and high visibility vests are needed. There will be a pub option for lunch, or bring a packed lunch. There will be a handout (including maps).

Special Equipment: Boots (wellingtons may be a better option), hard hats and high visibility vests are required. (See also the general note on equipment above).
